To Use Slide Timings (Create a Self-Running Presentation): Select Slide Show Rehearse from the menu to rehearse timings. Select Slide Show Record Slide Show from the menu to rehearse timings. Display each slide as long as necessary, then advance to the next slide. PowerPoint will record the length of time each slide is displayed. Select the 'Custom Slide Size' option to choose another preset or type your own width and height. Click the 'Slides Sized For' drop-down list and choose a preset listed, or select 'Custom' and type the desired dimensions in the 'Width' and 'Height' boxes.

The purpose of this application is presentations, and unless you plan on giving presentations without a projector or via WebEx, forget about using PowerPoint 2011 for its prime purpose. My experience with it has been very positive when using it to put together a presentation, but when it comes to the actual output, PowerPoint falters. When hooked up to a projector, the preview pane on the computer that is being used (in my case a current model MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.5), displays a jumbled puzzle-like image that doesn't refresh.

PowerPoint 2011 fills a huge gap in the previous version’s animation repertoire by adding motion paths, which let you move objects along tracks that are predefined or that you draw from scratch. PowerPoint’s path animation tools exceed Keynote’s in some respects (PowerPoint’s paths are much easier to define and edit) and bring PowerPoint 2011 closer to PowerPoint 2010 for Windows. But I was disappointed that, unlike PowerPoint 2010, the new Mac version doesn’t include an advanced timeline, which displays all the animations on a slide in a graphical timeline format. That’s an unfortunate omission; it’s much easier to choreograph multiple animations graphically than it is to drag them up and down in a list. I was also frustrated to see that PowerPoint’s library of transitions, the special effects that morph one slide into the next during a presentation, still aren’t up to Keynote’s standard. PowerPoint’s dissolve transition is coarser than Keynote’s, and PowerPoint lacks equivalents to many of the stunning effects in Apple’s software. For example, Magic Move, a versatile Keynote transition that moves objects as one slide replaces another, is absent from PowerPoint.

I'm using PowerPoint for Mac 2011 on my MacBook laptop running OS 10.6.8 — and when I gave a recent presentation everything worked fine, but when I checked the slides back at home, they had INCREASED in size so that the top line of text was OFF the top of the slide and the bottom line of text was OFF the bottom edge. And the text font size box read 59 points even though I had set it at 36 or 32 points! I'd look at 'Page Setup' in the FILE menu and made sure it was set for the smallest sizes of aspect ratio — On-screen 4:3 or even 35 mm slide setting, but the slides still looked like 16:9 or LARGER even though that was NOT. I just want to confirm, even though you said it pretty clearly, is that the actual font size changed.

Printing as PDF Maybe you don’t have to print to paper; instead, you can print to PDF files. In PowerPoint, use the Print What pop-up menu in the Print dialog to choose what aspects of your presentation to print as a PDF file, and then click the PDF button to save what you have chosen.

The images I have on my power point are screen shots of software that has a particularly small font. The screen shots look crystal clear in power point, but when brought into an existing captivate module via File > Import > Power Point slides, the end result in Captivate is a blurry screenshot. Do you have any suggestions or explanations as to why I can’t translate the quality in power point over to my captivate file?

In most cases (unless you have previously created a template you want to use), choose to create a new presentation with a white background by clicking the 'White' thumbnail in the list of themes. Or if you are editing a presentation you previously created you can click on its name in the 'Recent Presentations' at the bottom of the left-hand column of the window. Alternatively, you can click 'Cancel' and a new, blank presentation will appear. Or you can go to the File menu and choose 'New Presentation' or 'Open.'

If you wait until after you build your presentation, when you change the paper size, it can cause graphic objects and even text to look squished, stretched, or otherwise distorted. PowerPoint can print large posters if you have access to a large format printer. Likewise, you can use Page Setup to choose a very small size. In PowerPoint, use the Print What pop-up menu in the Print dialog to choose what aspects of your presentation to print as a PDF file, and then click the PDF button to save what you have chosen.

• In the Width and Height boxes, PowerPoint accepts measurements in inches, centimeters, or pixels.
