While almost every business accounting package you’ll find offers a way to enter time billing information into time sheets, Billings Pro lets you track your time in the field, and create an invoice directly from the collected information. This may sound like a small deal, but it’s integral to the way many people bill for services, and a feature missing from all of the other applications mentioned here. While I do love Billings Pro, it’s not perfect and requires you to discover the “Billings Pro workflow” before you can use it. In the Billings Pro world everything you do needs to be part of a project, so no matter what you’re doing, you have to set up a project first and then add Working Slips to those projects and bill based on information collected in the slip. This isn’t a huge problem, but may be an unnecessary step for some businesses. QuickBooks Mac 2014 got a (; $250) last December. Well, no surprise, there haven’t been any changes.

This year Intuit has expanded this feature to include Bills & Bill Credits as well as Invoices & Credit Memos, which are very welcome additions. Send Journal Entries to QuickBooks Mac 2014 doesn’t have an “Accountant” version. There are accountants who are supporting their QuickBooks for Mac clients by “round-tripping” between the client Mac product and their own Windows product (QuickBooks Accountant). QuickBooks Accountant 2014 will make this process a bit easier. The normal process (as I understand it, it is something I’ve not done myself), is: • The client makes a QBB backup of their file ( Backup to QuickBooks for Windows in the file menu).

• Processing payroll, integrated with QuickBooks for Mac, requires paid subscription (sold separately), EIN and Internet access. QuickBooks 2019 for Mac works with Intuit QuickBooks Payroll for Mac • QuickBooks Payroll for Mac requires Internet connection and Adobe Reader to print checks and forms; additional fees apply • System requirements for Intuit QuickBooks Payroll for Mac and Aatrix • Top Pay may differ from those of QuickBooks.

Using a check as an example, you have a from account (the checking account) and one or more to accounts (the detail expenses, or the items). The Reclassify Transactions tool has only allowed you to reclassify the to account up until now. Let’s show you how this works in QuickBooks 2013, with a fairly simplistic and contrived example (sorry about that). Here’s a check that I wrote. I messed up big time. It is a check to our insurance company.

This saves a conversion step, AND it means that the client can continue to work with their file while you are examining your copy. Just send them GJE’s to adjust their file.

If home is where your heart is, then there’s a pretty good chance that home—or at least your Home Folder—is where you prefer to keep your business’ financial information. While there are plenty of excellent you can use for tracking your business finances, if you’re uncomfortable with the idea of working within a browser and keeping your business’ financial information in the cloud, a traditional Mac application is your best option. I looked at four apps for managing your business invoicing and finances: Cognito Software’s, The Acclivity Group’s, Intuit’s, and Marketcircle’s. The first three are traditional invoicing and accounting applications, while Billings Pro offers compelling features, but also requires additional software to complete the package.

I know the question you’re going to ask first and the answer is, “no.” There is no file level compatibility between the Mac and Windows versions of QuickBooks and, after asking this question of Intuit for more years than I care to count, I’ll be surprised if the answer will ever be, “yes.” That said, Intuit has made it easier to send data to and update data from your accountant. Earlier versions of the app required that you use QuickBooks’ Roundtrip feature to create a backup of your Mac data file that could be restored in the Windows version of QuickBooks. Unfortunately, while your accountant worked on your file you couldn’t make any changes to the data on your Mac. Now QuickBooks for Mac allows you to import journal entries, which is essentially the debit and credit information for every transaction you create.

Double-click any Snapshot item and you drill down into the data driving the information you see. Some text in some of QuickBooks for Mac's graphs isn't as clear as it should be. While I found the Snapshot extremely useful—I often find myself using QuickBooks Online’s version of the same feature—I’m not happy with some of the design decisions made for the tool. For example, because of small text size and a mottled background, text used in the graphs appears to be blurred. One other new feature I found useful in QuickBooks for Mac is a tool called Set Up and Go, which provides helpful video overviews of how to get started with QuickBooks’ most-used features. Bottom line As has been the case for the last several years, there’s not too much that’s too different about the latest version of QuickBooks for Mac, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Little has changed about the way the AccountEdge looks in nearly a dozen years, but, in terms of accounting capabilities, it remains a solid application. Little has changed in the way AccountEdge looks, but you’ll find a number of new features under the covers that should enhance your accounting experience. AccountEdge has long been an application that allowed you to do your business in a networked environment on both Macs and PCs and, like MoneyWorks, gives you control over who has access to specific parts of your company’s financial data. The program still provides excellent tools for securing your data while still providing access to your accounting and inventory data in a multiuser, multiplatform environment. While not much has changed on the front end, AccountEdge has added a few new features for 2014, including the addition of master inventory items that allow you to create dozens of varieties with out having to create distinct inventory items for each variety. So, for example, you can create a category called Whole Bean Coffee that can then be broken down into more specific varieties such as specific roasts in caffeinated or decaf, all of which makes it much easier to manage your inventory.

Top choice: MoneyWorks Gold 7 If you’ve been around the Mac accounting game for any length of time you’re likely already aware of the more well-known players, QuickBooks and AccountEdge. The one application that probably hasn’t made it onto your radar—but should have—is Cognito Software’s (; $499).
