Parallels is better supported by Autodesk and works better and faster with Revit. I've used both extensively over the years (starting with Fusion), and now use Parallels exclusively. I'm not sure what you mean by 'security' - virus protection?

Of course, back then Autodesk didn’t even offer a version of! The good news is, things are quite different now an we finally have some viable options for running Autodesk software on an machine. Autodesk has provided an Apple version of AutoCAD for several years now, but still there is no native version of Revit for Mac in sight.

Again, even if you don’t have a license for Windows 10, you can still test performance of Revit for Mac or Linux by installing Windows 10 without activating it. However, if you are planning to use Windows for anything beyond that, please activate it!

Hi MrHaiku - welcome to RFO! You're correct in that once you set up the boot camp partition, there's no way to resize it - you have to make an educated guess.

Aloha all, I am facing a decision on buying a new computer. My primary use for this machine is REVIT. I wonder if any of you out there are experiencing blissful times or indeed problems associated with a mac similar to the latest imac w/ 32GIG RAM and the best video card mac can come up with. I see from the specs that they have gone away from NVIDEA which is what Autodesk recommends.

Revit Mep 2016 For Mac

So again, whatever level of workstation The User and The Superstar gets, ensure the best Xeon with the most multicore processors, ADSK recommended NVIDIA M or K GPUs, and get the most RAM above 64GB you can, with SSDs for the best Revitouring experience.

Unless you regularly visit the internet 'underworld', there's no reason to install additional anti-virus/security utilities beyond what W8.1 provides by default (a basic anti-virus/malware scanner is included with W8, and is a free Microsoft download for W7). In my experience, anti-virus utilities like McAfee just make a mess of things and cause far more problems than they solve. It's actually pretty straight forward - your Mac will be just like a generic Windows PC in boot camp. Just follow the directions exactly as Apple guides you through the steps - don't try to second guess the setup process - that's where most folks from the Windows world get into trouble.

That allows you to run applications in each operating system without restarting your computer.” OK, back to Windows PCs and my general suggestions. Processor Xeon multicore processors. Get as many and as robust cores as your $ allows. Did someone say 44 cores and 512GB RAM? Yes, I just did.

And in the PowerShell ISE as well. And NotePad++. It makes text selections beyond a single windows worth a breeze! Hi, I have a question. (I've skimmed through the near recent thread and I don't think I've seen this) I have a new 27', 3.2Ghz iMac.and I'm going to put revit on it (asap) full disclosure.I am not massively computer savvy.just enough to be dangerous. But, I did partition my older 2008 iMac with Autocad 2006 thru Boot Camp. I really don't really feel like I need vmware or parallels.this comp is really for cad only at this point.

If you only need an instance of Revit for Mac to review models or do some light work, you may want to go the route of using virtualization software such as. In a nutshell, this sort of emulation gives your non-Windows machine a virtual machine “inside” of it. In computing, an emulator is hardware or software that enables one computer system (called the host) to behave like another computer system (called the guest). An emulator typically enables the host system to run software or use peripheral devices designed for the guest system. Emulation refers to the ability of a computer program in an electronic device to emulate (or imitate) another program or device. The major downside to using an emulator to run Revit for Mac is your machine is technically working nearly twice as hard to run an operating system inside of an operating system. Although this will get you up and running faster than partitioning your hard drive, it is probably not the best solution for most Revit users.

Create Your Virtual Machine Give the virtual machine a name and choose the appropriate Type and Version of Windows. In the following dialogs, you will be prompted to choose some settings for your virtual machine such as allocating RAM and the Hard disk. I am far from an expert at virtual machines so I won’t pretend to know the best settings, but for this test I went with 10GB of RAM and a VDI hard disk of a fixed size. I went with a fixed size hard drive because I’ve heard that it can improve performance for virtual machines.

If you don't plan to use OS X much and use the iMac almost exclusively as a Windows computer, then you can dedicate almost the entire drive to bootcamp (though I'd leave about 40GB for OS X for future OS X updates). You don't have to do anything with the cores or RAM in boot camp. Allocating cores and RAM is exclusive to a VM setup (when you setup the Windows VM, you specify how many cores and how much RAM to allocate to the VM). And yes, performance in a VM sucks compared to boot camp. Since I use OS X most of the time at home, I'll occasionally do a little family editing or load up a model to take a quick look at something in a VM, but otherwise, when I want to get a day of work in, I'll boot into boot camp and work there. Which isn't so bad these days with most stuff in the cloud. Presently, you'll want Parallels, not VMware Fusion.

Solution: While Revit does not currently have a native Macintosh version, there are still a few options that will allow you to use Revit when working with a Macintosh system: • Bootcamp: This allows you to boot your system into a Windows operating system, and take full advantage of the hardware. • Virtual Machine: Using virtualization software ( Parallels / VMWare) you can create a virtual hardware environment which Windows, and Revit are installed into. Note: There is some overhead in virtualizing the hardware, so performance on a VM will generally be reduced compared to running directly on the hardware.

As for the magic trackpad, I love it, and couldn't live without it, everywhere but Revit, where it does nothing at all. It's brilliant for scrolling long files and such, but I have yet to find a use in Revit. Now in Final Cut Pro I would die without it.

Don't know if there is any way around it when you've got a laptop that 'kicks on' a 3D graphics card on-demand when running a 3D app, and uses a lower-power card when not. A big hello to the Mac Revit Group. Being a new to not only Revit but also to now owning a beast of a Macbook Pro (brand new top of the tree spec.) i thought i might chime in on my experiences thus far. When in OSX, Parallels 10 is what i'm using, the biggest pain i have found is the lack of hardware acceleration. When in Bootcamp running Windows 8.1, the biggest issues i have come across is heat.

Method 1: Standard uninstall method The recommended method is to remove the update Control Panel. Service Packs can be safely removed as long as the previous Service Pack or original release is still supported (as Service Packs also contain security updates). Note: When a fixed version of a security update is being released, make sure you install it again as soon as possible. Other non-security updates can be safely removed as well. Can i remove outlook for mac 2011 without affecting office. Most updates can be removed this way.

I think they are using AMD brand. Currently i am running on a 2009 imac w/ only 8 GIG RAM and clearly the hard-drives are faster now. Only recently did i discover a brilliant review by Mervin Christopher which enabled me to up my RAM allocation to 4GB, and the use of processors to (2) from the previous (1) GIG OF RAM and (1) Processor.

The companies worked together to enable users to access Revit via the cloud using any browser, with no plugins required and is officially certified! This means users will still have access to support if they choose to run Revit using Frame. Frame comes in. Frame Personal for individual users using the software on their own personal computer. Frame business for larger teams who want to work collaboratively in the cloud and finally Frame Platform for software publishers.

The browser version operates at fast paced out of the cloud and there is no need to use supplementary plug-ins. Therefore, the users can remain in Mac environments with out any difficulty for the complete experience.

Rather than waiting for Autodesk to release Revit for Mac, there are several options for running Windows applications on an Apple machine. Bootcamp and Virtualization Apple has gone to the extreme and has finally given its users the option to partition their hard drive and boot directly to a Windows installation using, which obviously will let you run any Windows application you like. Really, at that point you have transformed your shiny Apple into a Windows box.

However, many Revit users are still reluctant to make the move to Mac for one obvious reason. The CAD software is simply not compatible with the current Mac operating system. Although this doesn’t exactly mean that you can’t use Revit on your Mac operating system. As many people have found a workaround and that meant running Boot Camp which turns your Mac into a Windows PC. However, you could argue this defeats the point of purchasing and using a Mac.

But i find windows like gum under my shoes and being a surfer i hate wearing shoes in general anyway. So i would prefer to stay on the side of the light.. But if i must then i must. Also i would wonder how your parallels experience equates with running it in bootcamp. My process involves a lot of cut-n-paste from Clients/ and Engineers via email which i turn into text edit docs and then make sheet notes but for now i like being in the Parallels environs - tho i would surely test out bootcamp.

The only option is to install bootcamp drivers but they seems to not support Revit on 5K (at least on AMD R9 M395 graphic card). I've readed many topics in AMD forum and many people have the similar problems related with AMD drivers on new IMACs.

Running in BootCamp you'll get a super fast native Windows machine with better build quality and better drivers than you would get with a Windows desktop. Only major caveat being the 5K display. Windows is a joke when it comes to really high res display support, and Revit is a joke on top of the joke.

For now i didn't set my partition big enough to run bootcamp properly so i have never been able to test it.. All thoughts on the matter of REViT greatly appreciated.

When using Revit back in 2005, I was an Apple Macintosh user. As with learning any new application, and in this case learning about the technology of Building Information Modeling itself, I became obsessed and I wanted a version of Revit for Mac.

While I am at it, stick to the NVIDIA Quadro’s M or the more budget-conscious, though lesser, K series. Figure 1 The ADSK SysReqs can be found for 2008 through 2017 (at the time of this article, August 2016). Macintosh is spoken to there as well, though the Windows-based specs are quite strikingly more thorough, if not ultra conservative (IMHO a bit too weak, but we’ll get there). And since I will mostly be sidestepping the whole “Mac thing” herein, let’s look at the terse requirements for Mac usage: “Running Revit® products on a Mac Refer to the attached document about using Autodesk® Revit® software with Boot Camp®, part of Mac OS® X that enables you to install and run Microsoft Windows (and Windows-based applications) on a Mac® computer or with Parallels Desktop, a system utility available from Parallels, Inc.
