As to upgrading from ver 8.0 to ver 8.5: the company charges nearly a hundred bucks for the multi-megabyte download, forget it. On-line support is good, with an active user forum. The number one pro in my opinion is the ease in which you can start using Filemaker Databases. The templates out of the gate are well built, have a nice UI and give you the freedom to make them yours easily. Beginners can use the templates to get a taste for the Filemaker development structure while not having to climb a steep learning curve to get an app or database off the ground. Deployment is one click for simple web use and a few more clicks to deploy on a hosted solution like Amazon Web Services. For the expert user, complex systems can be made in a shorter amount of time and a GUI can be in place at the same time.

You can view, edit, and update chart bar, line, and pie charts, but you can't create them from scratch within FileMaker Go. The previous version of FileMaker Go let you transfer FileMaker Pro files from your desktop to your iPad using iTunes (or, alternately, by opening and saving an e-mailed file), but the changes weren't synchronized; you needed to use FileMaker Pro on the desktop to import data, which was annoying as it resulted in multiple entries. But if you had files stored on a hosted FileMaker server, any changes that you made using FileMaker Go were automatically saved to the original database file. Overall, the experience was less than ideal. The situation has been addressed. FileMaker 12 now delivers direct, real time updates when synced to FileMaker Pro 12 using FileMaker Pro Server, so you don't have to worry about being a step behind.
