I go back to Tools-Langauge-Set Language and English (UK) is STILL selected as the default language!! I also noticed: 1) “Detect Language Aoutomatically” under ‘Language’ menu is greyed out and 2) If I open a blank sheet under Word and I type text directly, English (UK) will be used for spell checking. But if I paste text into Word from anywhere else, then English (US) will be used instead! Any idea what might be going here, please? In particular, how can I get back that greyed option of “Detect Language Aoutomatically”? Thanks in advance.

I understand what you mean, but the root of the problem is that Spelling Checkers are not enough by themselves. They can only suggest words they have in them, so even the best will give you the wrong words in some situations. For example, I constantly see 'where' & 'were', 'then' & 'than' and several other non-homonym words used incorrectly. The basic problem there is that all four words are spelled correctly, but used improperly. Spelling Checkers ONLY check spelling! A Grammar Checker ― if used properly ― will catch such mistakes and ― IF it has the words you want ― suggest the proper replacement. I'm seeing fewer grammar checkers ― probably because people don't like getting told they are wrong that often ― and a wide split between really good and really bad Spell Checkers, with almost none in between.
